Every year I struggle with getting my kids to do their chores. I also struggle with being able to provide a consistent allowance. For the last 5 years hubs and I have been in school and have had out-of-pocket expenses which have even prevented us from buying X-mas gifts for the kids some years. So, providing an allowance for four kids would mean not buying gas for that week. Since that wasn’t possible we were not able to give them allowance.
I was reading Disney’s Family Fun magazine the other day and came across an article discussing Daddy Dollars. This article from the September ‘09 issue has inspired me to set up a new chore list and create a rewards program for my kids using the Daddy Dollars.
When I told my son (13 years old) that he would have to earn Daddy Dollars in order to play video games he got quite upset, but I told him that it’s not fair that he leave his messes everywhere either. Now he will be able to earn “fun time” by pulling his weight and doing his chores in a timely manner without us having to ask him or the other kids a million times.
We start the program next week, so I’ll tell you how it goes.
